Opening song and prayer

Sing The Song of the Heart (Children's Songbook 266), then invite a child to offer the opening prayer.

Light in the Dark

Dim the lights or have children gather in a darker corner. Turn on a flashlight and shine it on the floor.

Ask a volunteer to walk across the room using only the flashlight beam to see the path. Tape paper strips on the floor as stepping stones if you like.

Explain that Psalm 119 says God's word is a lamp and a light. In dark or confusing times, scriptures show us where to step next.

You do not need to see the whole hallway to take one good step. You just need enough light for right now. That is what scripture gives us.
Then ask
  1. Could you see the whole room with just the flashlight?No, only the part where the light was shining. That was enough to take the next step.
  2. What are some 'dark' moments when a child might need guidance?Let children answer. A hard choice, feeling lonely, not knowing what to do, or being tempted.
  3. Where can we find God's light when we need direction?In the scriptures, through the Holy Ghost, from prophets, and from good parents and leaders.

Scripture lights our path

Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible, and almost all of it is about loving God's word.

The writer says scripture is a lamp for our feet. That means it helps us with the very next step, not just the far-away future.

Praise God with a song in your heart

Psalm 150 says everything that breathes should praise the Lord. Praise means telling God how great He is, with words and with joy.

We can praise Him in sacrament meeting, at home, outside, and even silently in our hearts when we notice something good He has done.

Psalms were songs. Many were meant to be sung out loud. Let's talk about praising God with music.

  1. What does it mean to have a song in your heart?Feeling joy and gratitude for God even when you are not singing out loud. Your feelings praise Him.
  2. Name something Heavenly Father has done for you that makes you want to say thank you.Let children answer. Family, the gospel, creation, answers to prayer, or the Savior.
  3. Can you praise God without a piano or a microphone?Yes. Praise can be a prayer, a kind act, a smile, or noticing His blessings.
  4. How could you praise God today before you go to bed?Let children answer. Thank Him in prayer, sing a hymn, or tell a family member something good God did.

Psalm 127 says children are a heritage from the Lord. That means families are one of God's greatest gifts.

When we praise God, we can thank Him for parents, grandparents, siblings, and the chance to be together forever through temple covenants.

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
Ask
  1. Why a lamp unto the feet and not a spotlight for the whole road?Because God often gives us enough light for the next step we need to take, one step at a time.
  2. What is 'thy word'?God's word in the scriptures and through His prophets.
  3. What is one choice you need light for this week?Let children answer with something real in their life.
Psalm 150:6
Let every thing that hath breath praise the Lord. Praise ye the Lord.
Ask
  1. Who is supposed to praise the Lord according to this verse?Everything that breathes. That includes every person and every living creature.
  2. What are different ways to praise the Lord besides singing?Prayer, service, obedience, gratitude, sharing the gospel, and living like Jesus.
  3. What is one thing you will praise God for out loud today?Let children answer. Something specific from their own life.

Give each child a long paper strip.

On one side, have them write or draw one way scripture helps them. On the other side, have them write or draw one thing they praise God for.

Tape the strips together into a class banner and hang it where they can see it. Read a few aloud together.

Testimony

Testify that you have felt God's word guide you through a specific hard choice, and that praise has changed your own heart on a difficult day. Bear witness that Jesus Christ deserves our praise every day.
