Holiness unto the Lord

Sing I Love to See the Temple (Children's Songbook 95), then invite a child to offer the opening prayer.

Two Houses

Place two boxes on a table. Fill one with small treats or nice items and label it 'My House.' Leave the other empty and label it 'God's House.'

Tell the class that the people in Haggai's day had built nice homes for themselves but had not finished rebuilding the Lord's temple. Ask: which box got all their attention?

Move some items from 'My House' into 'God's House' together. Turn on a flashlight over the temple box and say that when God's house comes first, His light fills everything else too.

Haggai's message was simple: consider your ways. Look at where you spend your time and your heart. Are you building your own house first, or the Lord's?
Then ask
  1. Which box had all the good stuff at the start?My House. The people's own homes got their best effort.
  2. What did Haggai want them to finish building?The temple, the Lord's house.
  3. What is one way we might put 'our house' before God's house today?Let children answer. Extra screen time instead of scripture study, sports on Sunday, or spending money only on ourselves.

Consider your ways

After the Jews returned from Babylon, they started rebuilding the temple but stopped. Instead they worked on their own comfortable homes.

The prophet Haggai asked them to consider their ways. That means pause and look honestly at your choices. Zechariah also saw visions encouraging the people to keep building and to stay faithful.

Haggai's words are the title of this video. Let's hear what 'consider your ways' means for us.

Temples are the Lord's holy house

Zechariah saw visions about the temple and about the coming of the Lord. Temples are places set apart for sacred ordinances. The words 'Holiness to the Lord' remind us that everything inside points us to Jesus Christ.

We may not live near a temple, but we can still prepare to go someday and keep our own lives clean and reverent.

  1. Why did Haggai and Zechariah care so much about the temple?Because it was the Lord's house, where the people could worship Him and receive His blessings.
  2. What does 'holiness unto the Lord' mean?Being set apart for God. Pure, reverent, and dedicated to Him.
  3. What can children do now to prepare for the temple?Keep baptismal covenants, be honest, dress modestly, learn about families being sealed, and stay worthy.
  4. Have you felt peace at a temple or while thinking about one?Let children answer. A visit to the grounds, a picture on the wall at home, or a family sealing story.

The Lord also cares about a temple we carry every day: our bodies. Keeping our bodies healthy and pure is one way we show that we are trying to be holy unto the Lord.

You can fold a paper temple as a reminder that God's house matters and so do you.

Now therefore thus saith the Lord of hosts; Consider your ways.
Ask
  1. Who is speaking in this verse?The Lord of hosts, through the prophet Haggai.
  2. Why would God ask us to 'consider' instead of just giving a new rule?Because He wants us to think and choose with our hearts, not just follow blindly.
  3. What will you think about when you hear 'consider your ways' this week?Let children answer with one honest area where they want to do better.
Haggai 1:7
Thus saith the Lord of hosts; Consider your ways.
Ask
  1. Why do you think Haggai repeated this phrase?Because the people needed to hear it more than once before they changed.
  2. Is it ever too late to reconsider your choices?No. The people started building again when they listened. We can repent and change too.
  3. What is one way your family puts the Lord first?Let children answer. Family prayer, scripture study, church attendance, or temple pictures at home.

Build a paper temple

On the temple, have each child write 'Holiness to the Lord' or draw one way they will put God first this week.

Display the temples on the table next to the 'God's House' box from the object lesson.
