The Wounded Healer
4 minHold up a dry twig or a brown paper root. Isaiah said the Savior would grow up like a root out of dry ground. He would not look like a flashy king. He would be humble and quiet.
Give each child a paper heart. Ask them to think of one sad or hard thing they have felt: a loss, a mistake, loneliness, or fear. Have them write or draw it lightly on the heart.
Place a small bandage on the heart while you read Isaiah's words: 'With his stripes we are healed.' Explain that Jesus did not have our exact hurt, but He chose to carry it anyway so He could heal us.
- Did the dry root look impressive or fancy?No. Isaiah wanted us to know the Savior would come humbly, not as a rich king.
- Why put a bandage on the paper heart?It reminds us that Jesus heals hurts we cannot fix alone. His Atonement covers sin and sorrow.
- Did Jesus deserve to suffer?No. He was perfect. He suffered because He chose to pay for our sins and feel our pain.
- What is one hurt you want Jesus to help heal?Let children answer quietly or generally. Guilt, sadness, fear, or a mistake they regret.
Jesus bore our griefs and sorrows
6 minIsaiah 53 is one of the clearest prophecies about Jesus in the whole Old Testament. It describes someone who would suffer, be rejected, and die for other people's sins.
When Jesus lived on earth, people did not always understand. They thought His suffering meant God was punishing Him. Isaiah said the opposite. He was wounded for our transgressions. He carried our sorrows.
- Whose sins did Jesus suffer for?Ours. He paid for the wrong choices of all God's children who repent.
- What does 'borne our griefs' mean?He carried our sadness and pain. He understands how we feel because He felt it too.
- Why is Isaiah 53 sometimes called the forbidden chapter?Some people did not want it read because it sounds so much like Jesus Christ.
- How do you feel knowing Jesus understands your hard days?Let children answer. Grateful, loved, less alone, or more willing to pray.
He suffered in Gethsemane for us
6 minIsaiah said he was wounded and bruised. In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus took upon Himself the sins and pains of every person.
That was not a small ache. It was so great that He bled from every pore. He did it because He loves us and because Heavenly Father's plan required a perfect sacrifice.
- Where did Jesus begin the Atonement?In the Garden of Gethsemane, where He prayed and suffered for our sins.
- Could any ordinary person pay for all the sins in the world?No. Only Jesus Christ, the perfect Son of God, had power to do it.
- Why did Jesus keep going when it was so hard?Because He loves us and wanted us to be able to return to Heavenly Father.
- What can you do this week to remember the Savior's sacrifice?Let children answer. Take the sacrament thoughtfully, say thank you in prayer, or choose the right when it is hard.
With His stripes we are healed (optional)
optionalIsaiah's prophecy did not end with suffering. It ended with healing. Because of Jesus, we can be forgiven, comforted, and made whole over time.
That healing takes faith, repentance, and time. But the price has already been paid. We come to the Healer, not to earn His love, but to receive it.
- What are 'stripes' in Isaiah 53?Wounds from suffering. Jesus was beaten and crucified. His pain brings our healing.
- Does the Atonement only forgive sins?No. It also heals sadness, sickness, loneliness, and all kinds of pain when we turn to Him.

Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
- What did people wrongly think about the Savior's suffering?They thought God was punishing Him for His own sins. He was really suffering for ours.
- What is a grief or sorrow Jesus has carried for you?Let children answer. A death in the family, feeling left out, guilt, or worry.
- Why is it important that Jesus actually felt our pain?He can help us perfectly because He understands exactly what we feel.
But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
- What are transgressions and iniquities?Sins and wrong choices. He was wounded because of what we do wrong, not what He did wrong.
- What does 'with his stripes we are healed' mean for you?Because Jesus suffered, we can repent, be forgiven, and feel peace again.
- What is one thing you will do to accept His healing this week?Let children answer. Repent, pray, forgive someone, or take the sacrament with real intent.
Healed hearts
optionalHave children look at their bandaged paper hearts from the object lesson.
On the back, have them write or draw one way Jesus has helped them or one promise from Isaiah 53:5 they believe.
Invite a few to share, then collect the hearts on a poster titled 'With His Stripes We Are Healed' or let children take them home.
